Air Cargo Planning and Development
Rickenbacker International Airport
columbus, Ohio
The Rickenbacker International Airport is the hub of a dynamically active, 15,000-acre, multi-modal transportation and logistics center. Rickenbacker serves several key business segments, including international airfreight, freight forwarding, and e-commerce fulfillment and distribution, as well as passenger and general aviation uses. Initial services provided by CMT included a Master Plan for the civil land side development. The plan addressed existing facilities, cargo forecasting, facility requirements, alternatives analysis and plan development.
CMT has also provided engineering services for several projects at the airport. One such project included the design and construction observation services for a new air cargo facility to accommodate the hubbing operations of AirNet, a niche air cargo company based in Columbus. A notable feature of the award-winning project was a 425,000 SF apron that incorporated aircraft de-icing capture capabilities. Because of the military history of the site, CMT would need to address underground obstructions including several abandoned utilities, Air Force monitoring wells, and abandoned fuel tanks. CMT also provided design of roadway pavement improvements located in the maintenance area of the airfield near the Snow Removal Equipment Facility. Both projects were successfully completed on accelerated schedules. The design was completed in 90 days, including 30%, 70% and 100% submittals.
