CMT Wins Two Awards from ACEC Illinois

Top awards earned in Transportation and Waste & Storm Water categories

NOV 23, 2011: Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) received top honors in the Transportation and Waste & Storm Water categories from the American Council of Engineering Companies – Illinois (ACEC-IL) in their annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition. Honor Awards were given for the Reagan Memorial Tollway Rework and Widening project and for the new LaSalle Wastewater Treatment Plant project. Both projects are now eligible for the Eminent Conceptor Award, the state organization’s top prize, which will be announced at their annual awards luncheon on February 3, 2012.

Improvements were made to the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to meet projected 2030 traffic demands, accommodate open road tolling, upgrade roadway features to current standards and replace aging pavement were the main objectives achieved through engineering innovation and effective communication on this project. CMT served as project manager for a six-mile section of improvements, and also developed the concept and designed an innovative “counter-flow” temporary electronic toll collection system to avoid potential lost revenue during construction.

At the LaSalle Wastewater Treatment Plant, CMT introduced technologies that are new to municipal facilities in Illinois, including a Vertical Loop Reactor®, a Membrane Bioreactor system and a Cannibal® Biosolids Destruction System. The plant produces the high quality effluent necessary to discharge into an adjacent protected 303(d) listed stream and thus avoided a costly 1.5-mile outfall pipe to a larger river. This LEED certified project was successful in fulfilling the client’s three goals of reducing costs, meeting future treatment needs, and being environmentally friendly.
