Sustainable Street Success Hits the Road

Georgia03/01/2012: The Georgia Street Reconstruction project was in the spotlight this past February and the subject of countless media stories when the street served as the site of Super Bowl Village during a ten-day period leading up to the championship football game. Over one million people walked the three-block urban street that transforms into a plaza during special events. Now that the football fans and national media have returned home, two CMT employees are hitting the road to tell curious industry members the behind-the-scenes story of how this unique project came to attract some much attention.

Cassie Reiter, PE, who served as CMT’s project manager, and design engineer Adam Burns, PE, were closely involved with the project during its accelerated, seven-month design phase, and through to construction. In an on-going series of speaking engagements, the two professional engineers are sharing the concept behind the unique curbless street design and innovative drainage system that allows the two-lane roadway to be used as a plaza, complete with utilities for vendors and entertainment stages. Reiter and Burns are also highlighting the project’s many sustainable elements that helped earn its designation as a SITES pilot project.

As the Georgia Street project continues to draw interest - both from those in the design and construction industry, and the general public - CMT is committed to sharing the valuable lessons they learned along the way. The following is a list of upcoming presentations that are currently scheduled:
