Congestion Relief Program; Open Road Tolling

Illinois Tollway Converting Mainline Plazas to Open Road Tolling

Illinois Tollway | Multiple Northern Illinois Counties

The Illinois Tollway, as part of their Congestion Relief Program (CRP), initiated an aggressive plan to convert all mainline plazas on their system to Open Road Tolling within about a 20-month period. This created a shortened design period (of about six to nine months including master planning) and a construction period of less than a year on most plazas.

Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) was a prime consultant selected to lead the design efforts of six plazas for master planning and two plazas for design. Our team consisted of six other subconsultants and included the widening and reconstruction of five bridges as well as the removal and replacement of concrete pavements, shoulders and appurtenances. CMT provided Phase II engineering services for the preparation of contract plans and specifications and all project related permits for the proposed Open Road Toll Plaza conversions at two mainline toll plazas on the Northwest Tollway at M.P.1.7 (Devon) Plaza 17 and M.P.0.6 (River Road) Plaza 19 in Cook County, Illinois. CMT was also actively involved during the construction phase providing construction revisions, revised details, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings and attending weekly construction meetings.
