New Student Union

University of Illinois at Springfield

CMT provided planning, design and construction civil/site engineering and surveying related services for the new Student Union on the University of Illinois at Springfield campus. The $21.7 million project is a state-of-the-art, two-story student-friendly facility that houses a leadership center, multiple lounge spaces, diverse dining options, a ballroom that serves the campus as well as the Springfield Community, and office space. Along with coordinating efforts with the architect, landscape architect, food service and other vendors as well as campus leadership and a student advisory committee, CMT provided:

  • The design of a 100+ space parking lot with accommodations for bus traffic and easy access for vehicular and pedestrian routes around the facility,
  • The design of a circular roundabout drop-off entry and pedestrian and bicycle path access, and
  • A challenging drainage plan due to very flat grades across the site with shallow, poorly draining ditches that serve the area with minimal cover over drainage pipes.
