Chicago Executive Airport
Runway Widening and Rehabilitation
Wheeling, Illinois

The widening and rehabilitation of Runway 16/34 at Chicago Executive Airport (IL) was crucial to the airport’s overall economic vitality. But as one of the state’s busiest airports, it stood to lose over $300,000 for every day the runway was closed for construction. Closures would also cause capacity impacts at nearby airports and possible permanent loss of business at the airport.

CMT responded with a schedule that limited construction to the weekend while maintaining airport operations during the week. It was also the least costly of the five construction alternatives offered. The runway was rehabilitated and widened by 50 feet, using 60,000 tons of bituminous pavement and 50,000 square yards. of 10-inch PCC pavement. Despite the restrictive timeline, CMT worked with the airport, contractor, and the state department of transportation to complete the project on schedule.

This project was named Public Works Project of the Year by the Chicago Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association.
