Lambert International Airport
Runway 12L/30R Keel Section Rehabilitation
St. Louis, Missouri

Officials at Lambert International Airport had hoped that a new expansion runway would be open before attempting to rehabilitate its most critical runway. Unfortunately, the condition of the Runway 12L/30R keel section was so deteriorated that waiting was not an option. Because any significant runway closure time would result in major operational impacts at this major hub airport, the scope for the project called for “maximum planning and design effort.”

CMT designed the full-depth replacement of 6,000 ft. of existing pavement along with the replacement of the electrical system. Construction was completed during six, 55-hour weekend closures to minimize disruptions to service. Scheduling was so precise that at one point, pavement removal, grading, electrical can installation and CTB placement activities were all being conducted simultaneously in a 2,000-ft. by 25-ft. area.

This project was honored with the national Concrete Pavement Restoration Award from the American Concrete Pavement Association.
