West Florissant Complete Street Rendering from SWT Design
St. Louis County recently announced the beginning of the next phase of the West Florissant Avenue “Great Streets” project. The project is part of a larger regional initiative to make streets multi-modal, promote economic development and improve aesthetic appeal. St Louis County selected Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) to lead the design effort that would enhance 1.7 miles of a corridor on this primary thoroughfare through the communities of Ferguson and Dellwood, Missouri.

“We’ve had great success with high profile streetscape and complete street projects in Indianapolis, St. Louis, Branson, Missouri and other Midwest locations,” said Cassie Reiter, CMT’s project manager. “That experience will bring value to what we are doing here in north St. Louis County”.

Combining the holistic disciplines of engineering, architecture, planning, economic development and public involvement, CMT will be leading a large team of other firms to engage the public and plan the design concepts and preliminary plans. “There are no cookie-cutter approaches for this type of work,” Reiter said. “To bring the most value to the community with a Great Streets project, you have to understand the needs and desires of the people who live and work in the area. We’re looking forward to the opportunity.”

Both communities worked with St. Louis County and other stakeholders to secure $2.5 million in federal and local funding to finance the next step: preliminary design and public engagement. CMT will work closely with businesses, residents and other community stakeholders to move the Master Plan forward to preliminary engineering plans to enhance the surrounding communities.
