Interstate to Interstate Interchange Redesign

I-57 and I-74 Interchange Reconstruction

Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) | Champaign, IL

The Interstate 57 and Interstate 74 interchange continues to experience growth in traffic. Located on the northwest side of Champaign-Urbana , the home of the University of Illinois main campus, this project seeks to provide safer and more efficient transportation between two interstates. Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) in partnership with Bacon Farmer Workman facilitated the environmental planning and location design studies for the project which also consists of widening and/or reconstructing approximately four miles of interstate from a four-lane facility to six along with four overpass grade separation structures and dual mainline I-74 bridges, all planned for reconstruction or replacement.

The study generated several alternative interchange configurations. An engaging stakeholder approach helped to optimize the plan which resulted in selection of a concept that involved reconstruction as a semi-directional type with four outside connector ramps, two loop ramps, and two fly-over ramps. A Value Engineering study was also conducted as part of the project.

Estimated at $147 million, the project was then ready for design of full plans and specifications. Based an “Excellent” performance evaluation rating, the CMT team was then reselected for the design portion of the project which is currently underway.
