Tollway Pedestrian Bridge Aids Rapid Transit
Pedestrian Bridge for Park-n-Ride
Pace Suburban Bus | Hoffman Estates, IL
Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) architects designed a new $6 million enclosed pedestrian overpass bridge and accompanying entry buildings at the Hoffman Estates interchange of Barrington Road at the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90). The project includes a steel truss bridge with glass curtain walls spanning the tollway and connects express bus stations on both sides of I-90. The structures exterior design replicates the look of other structures that span the tollway.
The pedestrian bridge is part of an $80 million investment at the Hoffman Estate interchange, also designed by CMT, that showcases the innovative integration of pedestrian mobility with transit and tollway infrastructure. It includes:
- the region’s first exclusive bus rapid transit lanes with access from interchange ramps,
- bus pullouts,
- pedestrian over/under-passes of I-90 and the ramps,
- parking lot,
- kiss-n-ride,
- access improvements to the local street system for the park-n-ride, and
- bicycle and pedestrian connections to the existing network.
