Transforming Urban Mobility and Safety in a Growing Downtown
Main Street & Market Street Roundabout and Corridor Improvements
City of Lima, OH
Home to a high amount of redevelopment and growth, the City of Lima, OH, wanted to improve urban mobility and safety within the intersection of Main Street and Market Street in the central business district. After conducting a safety study with CMT, Lima chose to proceed with the final design led by this team of experts.
The project involved the transformation of the Main Street and Market Street intersection into a modern roundabout. The scope also included increasing ADA-compliant parking spaces by adding parallel and diagonal parking where feasible and improving pedestrian facilities with new and upgraded mid-block crosswalks.
CMT provided detailed design, including geometrics, maintenance of traffic, traffic, drainage, and ADA facilities. Additional services included drone survey and utility coordination.
The Main and Market Street Roundabout and Corridor Improvement project serves as a prime example of how engineers can collaborate with a community to navigate a project from conception to completion, surmounting all obstacles along the way.
The team assisted the City of Lima in securing state and federal safety funds for 90% of the estimated construction costs. To meet the funding requirements, design and final plan approval had to be completed in just over five months, a process that would normally require well over a year. The outcome of these endeavors is a modern roundabout with enhancements along the corridors, offering heightened safety and mobility for Lima’s residents while preserving the existing character of the downtown area.
