Enhancing Safety at Two High-Crash Intersections

State Road (SR) 32 on the west side of Noblesville, IN, experiences over 20,000 vehicles daily and was facing safety and capacity issues at two high-crash intersections: SR 32 at River Road and SR 32 at SR 38. This project added a second westbound lane and replaced signalized intersections with multi-lane roundabouts, significantly improving traffic flow and reducing crashes. One of the key challenges was managing traffic flow to the adjacent Riverview Hospital when their main entrance needed to be closed for reconstruction. The project team designed a temporary access road for ambulances to maintain uninterrupted access to the hospital’s emergency services, while public traffic was rerouted to a back entrance with special signage and outreach efforts. The roundabouts opened in September 2023.
