Scheels Sports Park
Springfield, IL
70-Acre Sports Complex Anchored by the World’s Largest
Air-Supported Sports Dome
Designed to fuel economic growth, strengthen community connections, and elevate local engagement, Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe stands as a premier destination for year-round athletics and events in Springfield, IL. At the core of the 70-acre development is the world’s largest air-supported sports dome, positioning the complex as a regional hub for sports, recreation, and tourism.
CMT served as the owner’s representative throughout the design, construction, and development phases, guiding the project from concept to completion at the strategic intersection of Interstates 55 and 72.
A Landmark Facility
- The highlight of the complex is the 196,625-square-foot indoor air-supported dome, measuring 275 by 715 feet and rising 98 feet – the height of a 10-story building. This expansive structure accommodates:
- Two full-size softball fields
- Six basketball courts convertible into 12 volleyball courts
The dome’s sheer scale is unmatched. As noted by CMT Project Manager Chris Stritzel, PE, the structure is large enough to house an entire Scheels store – plus half of another. To put it into perspective, the space could hold 7.5 billion ping-pong balls or contain the entire annual soybean harvest from Sangamon County.
Versatile, Year-Round Athletics
Beyond the dome, the park features a comprehensive lineup of lighted, fully synthetic turf fields designed for use by multiple sports including baseball, softball, football, and soccer. These all-weather facilities provide flexibility and durability, supporting athletes of all ages and skill levels throughout every season.
Additional Amenities Include:
- The Miracle Field, an ADA-compliant synthetic turf field
- Playgrounds and family-friendly spaces
- Concessions and retail offerings
- Vendor and tenant buildouts
Driving Economic Impact
Scheels Sports Park is expected to attract approximately 250,000 new visitors to Springfield annually, significantly boosting local tourism and economic activity. The City of Springfield projects the park to generate:
- $25 million in annual revenue
- 50,000 hotel nights supported each year.
Delivering Through Collaboration
On behalf of the client, CMT coordinated multiple design teams and contractors while managing a diverse group of stakeholders. The team also oversaw permitting, utilities, and funding distribution within the public-private partnership framework, allowing for seamless execution.
The project reached completion in April 2026, marking a major milestone for the region and establishing a new standard for sports and community-driven development.
