Summer 2023 marks Crawford, Murphy & Tilly’s (CMT) largest intern cohort yet, with 41 interns placed across 12 different office locations. This year’s group is diversified, with 16 interns in surface transportation, nine in aviation, nine in water resources, five in buildings and sites, one in information technology, and one in accounting. Among these 41 interns, seven are returning from the previous summer, and 20 are eligible for full-time positions within the next six months. CMT’s internship program continues to offer mutually beneficial opportunities for both the interns and the firm. Not only does the program serve as an excellent pipeline for potential full-time hires, but it also provides valuable, real-world experience to the interns, contributing to their professional growth.
The CMT Internship Experience
Throughout the summer, CMT engineering interns have had the opportunity to gain experience in both fieldwork and office-based work, providing them with exposure to various disciplines of civil engineering and time spent using cutting edge technology. Likewise, our professional services interns had the chance to see concepts from their coursework play out in real life in our accounting and IT departments. By offering a unique internship experience, we aim to gauge the interests and talents of these young professionals and assist them in identifying their preferred areas of focus.
Intern Orientation
CMT organized a three-part intern orientation program, allowing us to frame the learning experience in a consistent, all-encompassing manner while having some fun and getting to know others along the way. During the first session, interns dove into CMT’s history and heard about our core values and decades-long legacy, discussing applications of our strategic plan, and playing trivia. They also had the chance to hear more about CMT’s main engineering disciplines. In the second session, we brought in CMTers from several of our 25 offices to act as panelists, allowing the interns to ask questions and discuss additional aspects of what working full-time at CMT is like. They also provided insight as to how to get involved at CMT, including committees, employee resource groups, and communities of practice. Informative presentations highlighted our DEI initiative, Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI²) initiative, Quality of Place, and CMT’s Mentor Program.
For the final session, interns were then sent to breakout rooms to cover essential topics, such as building professional connections, joining professional organizations, turning an internship into a full-time position, and career development guidance. Additionally, Chief Innovation Officer Kevin Miller, PE, PTOE, presented on technology and innovation in the workplace.
Gratitude for CMT Interns

To our Summer 2023 interns – thank you for allowing CMT to provide you with a fulfilling internship experience. We hope each and every one of you enjoyed your time with us, and we wish you the best of luck in the upcoming school year.
