Renovations to Cribs in Lake Michigan
Intake Cribs Structural Renovation
Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT) provided consulting and design services to assess the condition and assist in the development of renovation strategies for two of Chicago’s Lake Michigan intake crib structures. Each crib is presently in use and provides an intake source of raw Lake Michigan water for the city’s Jardine Water Treatment Plant and the South Treatment Plant. The project included the evaluation of the structures in order to maintain their critical operations, assure continued structural integrity, upgrade safety features, architecture restoration that respect the aesthetics of the facilities and address the requirements of preserving the historical nature of the structures. CMT aided the Department in the decision-making process providing conceptual level solutions and alternatives.
Project elements included various steel and concrete structural items, masonry condition and tuckpointing considerations, condition evaluation of roofing, painting and preservation techniques, gate and motorized operator evaluations, floor and stairway repairs, lead based paint mitigation and transportation of workforce and materials.
