Thuma AwardCMT’s own Rich Thuma, PE, ENV SP, was honored with the 2021 Airfield Pavement Practitioner Award. This esteemed title, presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) Board of Governors, was created in 2009 to recognize practicing airfield pavement engineers for their outstanding leadership and achievements in this industry.

Rich is an airfield pavement management and design specialist and CMT’s Group Manager for Military and Special Projects. He’s a former military man himself, with eight years active duty and 13 years reserve duty as a Civil Engineer in the Air Force, evaluating pavements all over the world. Since joining CMT in 1999, he continues to be a recognized expert in airfield pavements and design criteria for military and civilian airports.

The ASCE states the following as guidelines for the Airfield Pavement Practitioner Award:

  • Service to the advancement of the airfield pavements engineering profession
  • Evidence of technical competence, high character, and integrity
  • Leadership in the development of younger member attitudes towards the profession
  • Other evidence of merit, which in the judgement of the ward committee shall have advanced the Committee’s objectives
